The Way of the Foot and Fist: Understanding Taekwondo
What is Taekwondo?
The word Taekwondo comes from three Korean words:
- Tae – “foot” or “to kick”
- Kwon – “fist” or “to punch”
- Do – “way” or “path”
-
Put together, it means “the way of the foot and fist”, which perfectly reflects this dynamic, kick-focused martial art.
Taekwondo is a standing-based martial art that uses powerful kicks, precise hand strikes, and agile footwork for self-defence and sport. Unlike grappling-based martial arts, it emphasizes explosive striking techniques, using the legs—our longest and strongest weapons—to maintain distance and generate maximum power.
What sets Taekwondo apart is its focus on high, fast kicks and dynamic movement. Beyond combat, it combines self-defence, sport, exercise, meditation, and philosophy into a system that develops the body, mind, and spirit. For millions of practitioners, Taekwondo is more than a fighting style—it’s a way of life.
